When to Replace Steel Windows

Unsure whether you require a complete replacement? You can see from this photo, the hinges are rusty and the casement windows won’t even shut properly anymore – no amount of paint or rust repair is going to hold this together! These signs indicate that it’s time to replace your steel windows:

  • Visible Damage: Stating the obvious, if you notice rust leeching through the paintwork, or bubbling and flaking on the frames, it’s definitely time for a replacement.
  • Difficulty Operating: As the rust builds up in the frame and hinges, windows become very difficult to open and ultimately don’t close properly.
  • Security: As rust progresses the closing mechanisms and latches fail, the windows become brittle and won’t lock at all which is an intruder’s paradise!
  • Energy Inefficiency: Old steel windows have very thin glass and will not provide insulating properties afforded by newer glazing technologies. The frames themselves deteriorate creating drafts and condensation which in turn inflate your winter energy bills.
  • Council Restrictions: Many Melbourne Homes have a Heritage Overlay or are within a Heritage Overlayed district. Trying to comply with local laws and energy requirements is a real challenge, but we can make new windows in the old style!
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Eventually no amount of re-glazing or anti-rust treatments will save the old windows. If your windows no longer suit your style or are just plain outdated, we’re here to help. Steel Windows replaced with Aluminium Double Glazed

This project is a great example of preserving the original heritage bar detail synonymous with the Art-Deco movement appearance of the original windows, whilst achieving modern day energy efficiencies.

The old rusty steel casement windows original to the house built in 1938 had reached the point of no return. The council insisted that, due to heritage overlay in the street, new windows had to be identical or within keeping of the home’s style. We worked over several months with our client and the local council and designed new energy and heritage compliant windows which satisfied all parties! Security is a greater concern today than it was last century, so these lockable double-glazed awning windows proved the perfect solution for modern day living.

About this project:

Using our partial-replacement method, the old windows were carefully removed from the frame without disturbing the brickwork or stucco. With our specially designed gasket fitting the new windows were installed into the existing internal frames prior to bolting and weather-sealing. The new windows featured encapsulated heritage bars in the double-glazing, and our expert carpenters installed new hardwood internal architraves in the traditional style for a magnificent finish. This was part of an entire houselot which took the team two days to complete, much to the delight of our client who now feels warmer and more secure in her beautiful character home. Surprisingly, steel window replacement is around the same price as a standard window replacement project.

Steel Windows Replaced with Traditional Timber brings Weatherboard Home Back to Life

Some people just love timber, particularly in weatherboard homes, and it can be every bit as beautiful as the original design when custom-made to suit and this is one of our favourites! Using Victorian Ash we crafted these beautiful casement windows with heritage highlites to really create a look consistent with the period of the home. The old steel windows were thin and rusty, some wouldn’t open and others wouldn’t close or lock. The home is located near a main road where traffic noise posed an issue, as well as being cold in winter and boiling in summer. The new windows feature combination double glazing with laminated glass for greatly improved indoor comfort all round.

Steel Window Replacement Modernises Your Home

If a house doesn’t have any particular period detail or character, sometimes it just makes sense to renovate and create a more contemporary look and feel by getting rid of steel windows altogether.

Our client purchased this recently rendered and painted home, only to find the old windows had rusty frames which had simply been sanded, bogged and painted over. Many of the windows in the home didn’t open at all and had deteriorated beyond repair.

We’re a bit ‘forensic’ when it comes down to it. As experienced builders, we looked closely for indications of structural instability, especially at the head of the window where telltale signs such as rust, dipping and cracks in the brickwork which indicate a blown lintel,or collapsed frame. Steel windows in older homes often formed part of the structural integrity of the opening, so serious deterioration can cause problem further up like the roof!

Fortunately, this home wasn’t a disaster waiting to happen and so it was a perfect candidate for our partial replacement method. The new aluminium double-glazed windows were made to precisely fit and went in like a dream. There was no damage caused to the render or internal wall surfaces during our works and when the owners arrived home at the end of a long day, they were delighted with the new look. Moreover, they didn’t have to fork out extra money for render repairs or painting.
